Renowned Ghanaian musician, Barima Sydney has revealed that his support for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2016 did not bring him any financial benefits. He said the remix he did of the ‘Mahama Onaapo’ campaign song was a waste of his time as he did not make any money out of it.
Speaking during a phone interview with, Dr. Cann on Happy 98.9FM’s Showbiz Xtra, the Hiplife artiste confessed that taking his time to campaign for the NPP was a stupid move that he embarked on without giving it a second, which he regrets up to date.
“In 2016, I openly declared my support for the then-candidate Nana Akufo-Addo. I endorsed that if he’s bringing us free SHS and other things then I support him so I openly endorsed which I regret today”, he stated.
The “Africa Money” hitmaker said that on the day of the recording as he was in the studio working on the remix, people were eagerly waiting for the Electoral Commission to declare the election results. That is when, Dr. Ray proposed that they do something since it was obvious that Nana Addo was winning elections and that is how he got to record the ‘Mahama Onaapo’ remix for the NPP in 2016.
He further admitted that the mistake he made was failing to consult with the original composer of song to ask for his consent to redo the song. He went on to justify his actions by saying that at that time he did not know the original composer and how to reach him, thus, he could not ask for permission. Nonetheless, Barima Sydney later found out about the original composer and reached out to him to apologize.
