Nigerian Afro-pop star Yemi Alade has been appointment the Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
UNDP confirmed Yemi Alade's appointment in a post on their official Twitter handle on Wednesday, September 23.
In the post, UNDP said the 'Johnny' hit maker will be their new voice for a green and equitable recovery.
"We're pleased to welcome Nigerian superstar @yemialadee as our newest UNDP Goodwill Ambassador! We thank Yemi for being our voice for a green and equitable recovery," read the UNDP tweet.
The organization also shared a video of the official welcoming of Yemi Alade where UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner who made the appointment said: "We can’t wait to hit the ground running with you, Yemi. We look forward to hearing and sharing the issues that you are passionate about -- including women’s empowerment and tackling inequality."
With the appointment coming at middle of the Coronavirus Pandemic, Yemi Alade is expected to help shine a spotlight on the disproportionate impact of the health and socio-economic crisis on the poorest and most vulnerable people, who are often women, especially in developing nations.
“Women are among the 4 billion people who are trying to survive COVID-19 without any form of social protection,” said Alade. “I want to lend my voice to these women and other vulnerable people who make up half of the world that’s struggling to make ends meet. They don’t have the luxury of working from home and are putting their health at risk just to put food on the table.”
Yemi Alade has had a largely successful career in music having released four albums to date, the most recent one being the 2019-released 'Woman Of Steel'.
The singer has also won multiple awards apart from being the first African female Afro-pop artist to hit over 100 million views on YouTube with her 2014 hit single 'Johnny'.
With the latest appointment, Yemi Alade joins a roster of UNDP Goodwill Ambassadors, which includes globally celebrated actors, athletes, musicians and other high-profile influencers.
