Who is Rema Namakula?

Rehema Namakula, popularly known as only Rema, is a Ugandan singer and songwriter. The songster is best known for her powerful vocals and creativity in her songs. She was born on the 24th of April in 1991 as the last born in the family of the late Hamida Nabbosa and the late Mukiibi Ssemakula.

The singer has an impressive educational background. She received her elementary school education at Kitante Primary School and then proceeded to Saint Balikudembe Senior Secondary School before joining Kyambogo University.

Rema Namakula sharpened her music skills at Karaoke events before she became a backup singer for her mentor Halima Namakula. Her immense talent and rich vocals saw her earn the attention of top Ugandan musicians who invited her to be their backup singer. Among the celebrated artists that she worked with was Bebe Cool’s band Gagamel. In 2013, the songstress decided to pursue her music career as a solo artist.

The youngster got her breakthrough on the Ugandan music scene as an independent artist courtesy of her viral hit song ‘Oli Wange’. She cemented her rise to stardom with other top-ranking songs that dominated various music charts, both within and beyond Uganda. Gradually but steadily, she rose to become one of the best vocalists in East Africa. This saw her rank among the most sought-after Ugandan artists.

In 2016, Rema Namakula alongside other music stars such as Lydia Jazmine, Radio & Weasel, and Eddy Kenzo was invited to represent her home country at the Coke Studio Africa 2016. This was a major achievement in her career as she got to rub shoulders with legendary artists from Africa and beyond the continent. Some of the top acts that were also featured in Coke Studio Africa 2016 were Nigeria’s 2Face Idibia and Trey Songs from the United States.

Rema Namakula decorated news headlines on social media and tabloids after details of her relationship with Uganda star musician Eddy Kenzo surfaced. The couple was blessed with a daughter, Aamaal Musuuza, on 26th December 2014. Unfortunately, the two, later on, parted ways under unclear circumstances.

The vocalist moved on and introduced her new lover Dr. Hamza Ssebunya in November 2019. The introduction became the talk of the town with the majority of the fans and other stakeholders in the Ugandan music industry coming out to congratulate her. Two years later, she welcomed her second daughter Aaliyah Ssebunya.

Rema Namakula has punctuated her journey in music with lots of achievements and prestigious awards. One of the most prestigious awards that featured her was the HiPipo Music Awards.
