Who is Bobi Wine?

Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine is A Ugandan musician cum politician. The 40-year-old music star ranks among the most respected veteran artists who laid the foundation for the current music industry in Uganda. The singer was born and raised in the Kamwokya slum in Kampala.

Bobi Wine has an impressive educational background that contributed to his growth both as an artist and politician. He attended Kitante Hill School from which he graduated in 1996 with a Uganda Certificate of Education. In 1998 he received the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education from Kololo Senior Secondary School. He proceeded to join Makerere University where he pursued a diploma course in music, dance and drama and graduated in 2003. Approximately 13 years later, he furthered his education by studying law at the International University of East Africa.

The music star has harbored a passion for music since childhood. He, however, officially ventured into music in the early 2000s. He made his breakthrough in the music industry with a number of his debut tracks including the likes of ‘Akagoma’ and ‘Funtula’. He started out by singing in the vernacular Ugandan language. Although he was flexible with various music genres, he was largely identified for his prowess in Reggae, Dancehall, and Ragga. Another factor that made him extremely popular on the Ugandan music scene was his signature of composing songs that had a strong educative message to society. He rose up the ranks to become one of the best artists in East Africa.

Bobi Wine who doubled up as an actor recorded a lot of achievements in his music career, from working with international companies to receiving prestigious awards. In 2016 Disney featured his song ‘Kiwaani’ in their movie dubbed ‘Queen of Katwe’. He has also set up his own recording label known as Fire Base records where he natures young upcoming talents. He has served as an inspiration and a source of motivation to many upcoming artists.

Over the years throughout his music career, Bobi Wine invested himself in educating society about politics and leadership through his songs. He championed human rights and democracy and at some points called out the government.

In 2017, he started a new journey when he announced his candidacy for the parliament. He was listed among the contestants for the Kyadondo County East constituency by-election. His commitment to serving the people attracted the attention of the media both within Uganda and across the borders. He surprisingly won the election with a large percentage and defeated veteran politicians including one from the ruling party.

In 2021, he went head-on against the incumbent President Yoweri Museveni in the presidential election. Although he lost, Bobi Wine gave President Museveni a run for his money in the election. His political career has been characterized by a lot of controversies including being put under house arrest.
