WAJE BIOGRAPHY

Aituaje Iruobe professionally known as Waje, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter and actress. She was born in Ondo state southwest Nigeria and grew up in Benin City.
When she was still very young, her parents divorced and she had to deal with the eventual difficulties that rose from the separation.

During her final year in secondary school, she got pregnant and because of how scared she was of receiving a backlash from her mum, she kept the news away from her for five months. Following her pregnancy, she was temporarily banned from the church choir because it was against the rules of her choir and the church in extension to get pregnant outside wedlock. After giving birth, she relocated to Enugu to enrol into the University of Nigeria Nsukka where she studied Social Work and earned a Bachelors degree thereafter. Whilst also in school she worked part time in the tourism industry.

While in the university, Waje shined with her music. She was a constant performer at school concerts and fellowships. With artists like Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin as her role models, she was also working and training her vocals to attain peak performance. This has rightfully earned her a place as one of the best vocalists in Nigeria and Africa at large.

Waje was introduced to the Nigerian music scene courtesy of Psquare’s Omoge Mi where she was featured on the remake. She was also the prominent voice on Psquare’s 2008 monster hit record “Do Me”, M.I Abaga’s “One Naira” and Banky W’s 2009 hit record, “Thief My Kele”.
In 2016, she was announced as one of the four judges of the first season of The Voice Nigeria alongside Timi Dakolo, 2Baba and Patoranking. Her impressive selection and coaching styles paid off making her the winning coach of the inaugural edition of the show with A’rese.
With over ten decades of presence in the Nigerian music scene, Waje has three studio albums and an an EP to her name. The first album, the self titled “W.A.J.E” was released in 2013 and five years later she released the critically acclaimed “Red Velvet” album.

In 2018, Waje shared an emotional video to her YouTube channel where she revealed that she is considering quitting music because of lack of funds. She expressly said that she doesn’t have the money to promote her music and also take care of her daughter who she has to make sure she gets a good education by paying for a good school, and that doesn’t come cheap. She further said that friends, well wishers and her fans in general persuaded her to drop an album but she did not earn enough money from the project which is a loss to her considering the amount time and money put in making the project happen. She would rather invest her money in other business ventures and take other paths that would be profitable to her because at this stage in her life and career the music is no longer done for passion but it should be able foot her bills.

“Maybe it is fair to give it a rest and try other things. I can’t have released an album after everybody has been shouting Waje your last Album was five years ago, all the people that were shouting, where are they?”, she said in the video.

Well, to the delight of fans, her challenges have not stopped as she has continued to release new music ever since.
