About CKay

Chukwuka Ekweani, professionally known as CKay is a Nigerian singer, songwriter and record producer from Anambra state southeast Nigeria.

He was born in Kaduna state, northwest Nigeria and was introduced to music by his father who was a choirmaster at their church. He is versatile and has dabbled across music genres before carving a sub-genre Afrobeats which he tags Emo-Afrobeats.

In 2014, CKay’s music career took a new turn for the better. Courtesy of Loopy Music an affiliate label of Chocolate City, he relocated to Lagos. Still signed to Loopy Music, he began working for Chocolate City and producing music for other rappers, hip hop artists and singers signed to the label.

On the 6th of May 2016, he released his first official single tagged “Bad Musician Bad Producer”, a tag he would go on to continue to use on most of his records.
Sometime in 2016, Loopy Music merged with Chocolate City and he now officially joined Chocolate City on the 31st of August 2016.

Following a response to popular music writer and critic Osagie whose infamous “Who the F*ck is CKay” statement sparked several debates online, CKay released an extended play project on the 11th of September 2017 titled “Who the Fuck is CKay?”

In March 2018, CKay released his first breakthrough record, Container, a record influenced by South Africa’s Gwara Gwara music genre. Produced by Tempoe, Container earned CKay good airplay and introduced him to a new set of audiences both local and international. Following the success of “Container,” CKay released “Way”, which would now go ahead to be the first single off the second project he titled “CKay the First”.

Released on the 30th of August 2019, the extended play project housed eight tracks and featured BOJ, Blaqbonez, Barry Jhay, and DJ Lambo. The EP was a remarkable success following a later major success achieved courtesy of a record off the EP “Love Nwantiti (ah ah ah)”.

On the 14th of February 2020, CKay released a remix to Love Nwantiti featuring Nigerian singer Joeboy and Kuami Eugene from Ghana. It would take another year for Love Nwantiti to become a global hit record following a couple of more remixes; the North African remix featuring ElGrande Toto and the following remix featuring Axel & Dj Yo!
The record has since gone on to earn certifications in different countries. Denmark, Poland, Netherlands, Australia, Canada and Italy are some of the countries it has been certified platinum. The video is also one of the most viewed Nigerian YouTube videos with over three hundred million views on the remix which featured Joeboy and Kuami Eugene.

On the inspiration behind the infectious hook of the song “ah ah ah”, CKay revealed that the part of the song was a freestyle he had recorded the previous night cos he wanted to use the melody to now write proper lyrics. In the morning when he was back to the song his manager heard the record and asked him to leave that part of the song like it is. For the remix featuring Kuami Eugene, CKay revealed that he was in Ghana to work on a song for another artiste when he met Kuami Eugene and asked him to jump on the record and he did without any hesitation.

Following the success of Love Nwantiti which was crowned with a number of awards and certifications, CKay released Emiliana on the 3rd of December 2021.

The record has since enjoyed massive airplay, views and streams across multiple digital platforms and also topped several charts across Africa.
