Oxlade Biography
Real name Ikuforiji Olaitan Abdulrahman, Oxlade is a Nigerian musician, singer and songwriter. He was born on the 22nd of April 1997 in Surulere Southwest Nigeria.
Due to the fact that he lost his mother at a very tender age, he was looked after by his grandmother and father who was a lecturer at the Lagos State University, LASU.
After his secondary education, he enrolled at the Lagos State University where he gained admission into the faculty of arts to study History and International Relations.
However, he dropped out after two years to focus on his music career, which eventually paid off.
Oxlade recalls his earliest introduction to music being his neighbours who kept the neighbourhood alive with the different genres of music they played out loud from their homes. This indirectly influenced his earliest music styles. Today, he prides himself as an Afrobeats artiste. He is known for his exceptional and unique vocals.
In 2018, after featuring on Blaqbonez’s “Mamiwota”, renowned A&R executive Bizzle Osikoya spotted his talent and approached him. The outcome of their meeting eventually led to him signing a management contract with The Plug, a talent management company co-founded by Bizzle.
It gets better, he subsequently signed a publishing, licensing and distribution deal with The Plug Entertainment and a record deal with Troniq Music.
Oxlade made his first show appearance on the 27th of December 2018 when he performed at the City of Davido Concert in Lagos. After that, he opened for Wizkid in February 2019 at the Starboy Fest in London.
Already enjoying performances on the big stages Oxlade released the music video to his breakthrough record Away. The TG Omori-directed music video was released on the 13th of April 2020. Away was also part of his first music project “Oxygene EP”. The extended play project housed six tracks and featured UK-based Nigerian singer and songwriter Moelogo. “Away” got Oxlade some attention from international acts like Drake who posted a screenshot of him showing he was listening to the record on the 7th of November 2020.
Following the success of his Oxygene EP, Oxlade in collaboration with his record label released his second project, “Eclipse”. The new EP housed four tracks inclusive of his hit song “Ojuju”.
Oxlade earned his first entry into the Capital XTRA Airplay Chart with the January 2021 released record “Interest” in which he was featured alongside Dolapo and UK Rapper, Ms Banks. The record also debuted on the UK Afrobeats Singles chart at number ten before eventually spending twelve consecutive weeks on the chart.
His second entry would come from his record Ojuju which has spent more than five consecutive weeks on the chart.
In March 2022, he was featured on the record “Overdue” from the “Coming to America 2” soundtrack album titled Rhythms of Zamunda. The project was released through Def Jam Recordings Africa, and Def Jam Recordings and also featured other Nigerian artists like Tekno, Tiwa Savage, Larry Gaaga and Umu Obiligbo.
