Fast-rising Nigerian singer Oxlade's hit single 'Away' has been listed among the 50 Best Songs of 2020 by the Rolling Stone, an American monthly magazine that focuses on popular culture.
In a star-studded list topped by Cardi B's 'WAP' featuring Megan Thee stallion, the 'Away' single is ranked at number 23.
While describing the song, the magazine which was first known for its coverage of rock music and for political reporting by Hunter S. Thompson said:
"Away is composed of just two four-line verses, a pair of lovely prehooks consisting of two repeated couplets, and a chorus made up of one word: “away.” When merged with a sunny beat from Spax, all springy bass and splintered guitar, the result is a miracle of economy, not to mention highly danceable."
It further points out that "Oxlade allows just two indulgences in the single — a pretty vocal arc before the repetitive rush of the chorus, plus a succinct guitar solo during the outro."
'Away' is the only song from a Nigerian artist that has been listed among the 50 Best Best Songs of 2020 by the Rolling Stone.
Its official music video released in April 2020 has over 2.3 million views on YouTube so far.
The song is housed in the 6-track 'Oxygen' EP that Oxlade released on March 27, 2020.
Other songs on the EP are: 'O2', 'Hold On', 'Kokose', 'Weakness' and 'Tables Turn'.
Born Ikuforiji Olaitan Abdulrahman, Oxlade is a 23-year-old singer who was brought up by his grandmother after losing his mum at an early age.
He started singing at the age of 10 in church.
