Shortly after leaving the PDP, Peter Obi joined the Labour Party and became the party’s flag bearer ahead of the February 25th presidential elections. With his influence, the party has become a third force and a major contender in the forthcoming general elections. From his impressive portfolio, here are ten interesting facts about Peter Obi.
1. He served as governor of Anambra State from 2006 to 2014 but his emergence as governor was not without a fight. After INEC declared Chris Ngige of the PDP as governor, Obi went to court to challenge the result of the elections and after three years in court, the court of appeal declared him as governor and he assumed office in March 2016.
2. In November 2016 (the same year he became governor), he was impeached but the impeachment only lasted for a few months as it was overturned and he returned as governor in February 2017.
View more3. Obi was awarded the prestigious National Honours Award of the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) in 2008 for his outstanding performance as governor.
4. He has also been recognized for his contributions to the growth and development of Nigeria's private sector and was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the Nigerian Stock Exchange in 2014.
5. He went to the University of Nigeria Nsukka and graduated with a B. A (Hons) in Philosophy in 1984.
6. During the regime of General Sani Abacha, Peter Obi led a group of traders to meet the president on issues about the port. While speaking, Abacha was impressed, and there and then made him the chairman of the Tincan Port where he worked and successfully decongested the ports making it easier for businessmen to clear their goods seamlessly.
7. He prides himself as a trader and has held several managerial positions in big firms. Among these companies are Guardian Express Bank Plc, Next International Nigeria Limited, and Future View Securities. He also holds the record as the youngest-ever chairman of Fidelity Bank Plc.
8. In 2019, he was Atiku’s running mate and in the presidential elections under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. They came second in the elections.
9. He is married to Margaret Brownson Obi. The marriage is blessed with two children.
10. When Peter Obi lost his sister, he decided against throwing a lavish burial ceremony for her, instead, he built a school and renovated a hospital in her honour.
