About Magixx
Magixx is one of the promising and popular breakout artists from Don Jazzy’s Mavin Record. He came into the limelight in 2021 and since then, he is making a name for himself as an upcoming Afrobeat star. But, who is he?
Adelabu Alexander is his real name. He hails from Ekiti State in Nigeria and recalls the great times he had in Ogba town where he grew up. Soon after finishing high school, he enrolled at the University of Lagos to pursue a degree in Mass Communication. He completed his degree four years later ready to put his studies into use.
At UNILAG, Magixx participated in and enjoyed the school's vibrant music scene. This helped him gain a dedicated following among a niche demographic in Unilag's entertainment scene. He recalls spending many hours while young engrossed in music of all kinds; from Pop to Hip Hop to Reggae to Highlife. His interest grew with every hour he listened to these songs and all he wanted to do was follow the same path and entertain people. He understood what being a songwriter and composing music is all about.
Magixx started performing in events at UNILAG and got a taste of how it feels to be a celebrity. After hearing nothing but praise from his fans, he resolved then and there to dedicate his life to music. In April 2019, he covered Burna Boy's smash hit, ‘Dangote’, which quickly gained over 35,000 views on Instagram. It spread like wildfire over the web and created a fan base that eventually got Don Jazzy’s eyes.
Before then, he had released a new song ‘Mirror’ in 2018 through MBN Entertainment in Nigeria. His lyrics to the song were so good that many thought this was one of his many singles. He then discovered the power of social media and started doing cover songs. By now, he had a combined fan base from UNILAG and social media. Therefore; every song he did brought him closer to his destiny.
In the years leading up to his signing with what is widely regarded as one of the most successful record labels in Africa, Magixx constantly looked for new ways to make his discography stand out. And one way was through cover versions of songs by musicians whose work he respected or looked up to. Gyakie, a Ghanaian songbird, is one example of such a person. He did a beautiful cover of ‘Forever’ by Gyakie in 2021 and added to the ballooning playlists his fans from both divides had.
He also released a cover of Adekunle Gold's "Sinner" on September 3, 2021. It was the last cover song he did before signing with Mavin Records. His music is trendy and sounds like a combination of Saint JHN, Kid Cudi, and Bryson Tiller. He incorporates elements of the improved form of street hop now being fused with Nigerian Afrobeat plus a stylish dance. On his debut EP ‘Magixx’, made of five tracks, the musician paints vivid pictures of his experiences with life, love, and humanity.
It is a perfect collection of songs that reflect his dynamism in songwriting and recording. He winds up generating a wide variety of concepts for his ever-expanding audience in Africa. In ‘Shaye’ a new single off his second EP ‘Atom’ released in August 2022, he samples a new style with Amapiano. This shows how much his creativity transcends the West African music landscape.
The 22-year-old’s inspiration is to speak to the Nigerian youth in a different way and music is of the ways to do this.
