Macky 2 Reacts to Government’s Call for Artists to Pay Loan Advanced by Previous Administration

Good Life investments under Mulaza Kaira alias Macky 2 is ready to pay back a loan advanced to it by the Presidential Arts Development and Empowerment Scheme. Two years ago, the Patriotic Front-led government disbursed a K30 million loan to various entities, artists included in a move geared towards bolstering artists.

It had a one-year repayment period which has since lapsed. With change of guard last year in August – a new government was elected – UNPD and has asked artists who benefited from the programme to pay back.

Macky 2 says that he has no problem paying back the money because it is a revolving fund that should help others too.

As part of the Presidential Arts Empowerment Loan Program, 152 artists received loans from the Citizens Economic Empowerment Commission (CEEC) and the National Arts Council (NAC).

However, the call for the loan repayment was not welcomed by everyone. Comedian Sarafina Nthenga expressed her displeasure with the government's call for artists to repay youth empowerment loans. She says the decision was one-sided because the government did not consult anyone.

Nthenga contends that the new dawn administration should have done an assessment to determine how well the beneficiaries were doing before requiring them to repay the loans.
