About Yonda
You probably know Nigerian crooner Yonda for singing alone, but he is a distinguished songwriter who has worked with the best of the best in the industry. Talks of Davido, one of the most talented Afrobeat artists in Nigeria.
Biography
The Adetunji family welcomed their son, Adeniran Abayomi Adetunji, into the world on June 11, 1992, in Lagos, where he grew up in a Christian family. He is a Yoruba by tribe, which somehow triggered his will to pursue music later in life.
The songwriter attended reputable schools in Lagos, where he perfected his oratory skills.
His history suggests that he developed a strong desire to pursue a music career as a teenager. He discovered he loved music when he was a teenager. Throughout his secondary school days, he dedicatedly wrote music. He became a regular figure at a studio adjacent to his parent's home, where he visited to record some of his songs as demos.
Just like many other Nigerian stars hit the limelight courtesy of established artists and record label owners, it took Davido for Yonda to become a phenomenon in Naija’s music scene. The Yoruba singer had a few tracks playing at neighbourhood events in Lagos, and it happened that Davido was impressed by his craft. He quickly struck a chord with the ‘Fall’ hitmaker and signed him in 2017 at his DMW label.
His official first song, Las Vegas, was released in January 2017. Due to the number of followers it garnered, this song became extremely popular. Months later, he made the decision to create a remix because of the song's popularity.
He roped in Burna Boy on the remix, and the song again blew up. With this success, he released the top-charting song "Bad Girl Riri” which surprised him as fans widely certified it as a representation of Nigeria’s next breed of charming genres.
He featured Mayorkun in this song before landing another powerful feature in Davido’s ‘Aje’ song alongside Peruzzi in April 2018. Impressed by his craft, Mayorkun featured Yonda in his 2018 song of the year Red Handed. The singer released ‘Sexcellency’ as part of his triumph in 2018 and spent several weeks at the top of the local music charts.
Yonda delivered his eager debut EP ‘Wild Blue’ into the musical world in December 2020. The EP has eight songs, all of which he wrote. If you are unfamiliar with his artistic work, this EP speaks volumes.
It gets better with features from Mobo, Mayorkun, Davido, Tee-Y Mix and Sinzu. In retrospect, he’s honoured and eternally appreciative of Davido because he gave him the platform to thrive as an artist. While building a musical platform is one thing, many people lack the talent to use that platform to help budding artists.
However, Davido proved that the DMW platform is more than a recording label; it fits the shoes of a musical fatherhood offering brotherhood to all who believe in their talents.
Despite his success in music, he remains grateful to DMW. The music business has taught him to be patient and to wait for the right moment, which is typically God's moment. Everyone can find the time.
The more the reason Yonda brands himself as the most adaptable performer in the history of Afrobeats. Abayomi recalls how he brought so much heat on Davido and Burna Boy over a song he wrote. Both artists were gunning for the song.
He detailed how Davido repurposed an old song he had previously recorded for Burna Boy in one of his albums. He had originally created the song for the Last Last hitmaker, but he dozed off it, and David saw something special in it. As much as he first did the song for Burna Boy, Davido had the right to repurpose the song into a new tune because the former did nothing to it. Further, he wrote and produced it when Burna Boy and Davido were both trying to sign him, but he chose DMW.
