About Burna Boy

July 2 1991 saw a superstar breathe his first and his parents named him Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu but he conquered the musical world as Burna Boy. The Nigerian crooner was born in Port Harcourt to parents who did pretty well in life. His father oversaw operations at a welding company. The afro-fusion singer partly studied in Southern Nigeria - Corona Secondary School in Ogun before flying to London for a course in Media Technology at the University of Sussex between 2008 and 2009.
The ‘Kilometer’ hitmaker would later move to Oxford Brookes University between 2009 –2010 to study Media Communications and Culture. He returned to Port Harcourt where he interned at Rhythm FM for one year before moving to Lagos where he enacted his dream to become a superstar. However, Burna Boy’s passion for music dates back to his childhood. His grandfather Benson Indonije once managed the legendary Fela Kuti and this inspired Ogulu that he composed his beats with FruityLoops when he was a young boy. Burna Boy formed a band that performed in concerts while he was in secondary school. And his mother supported him immensely.

She saw her son’s dedication to music and arranged for him to work as an intern at Rhythm FM. It was a routine for the Grammy Award winner to go into the studio and record songs daily after work following his return from London. He did this for a whole year and always had a generator in the trunk of his car in case the electricity to the studio went out. His hard work would pay off in 2012 as he shot to stardom with his debut album release album L.I.F.E. and the popular single "Like to Party" while at Aristokrat records.

The album sold 40,000 copies on its first day of release. He then sealed a 10 million Naira marketing rights with Uba Pacific. He got 2face, M.I., Reminisce, Wizkid, Timaya, and Olamide to appear on the album. It had dots of Fela Kuti’s magical works which is why it ranked seventh on the Billboard Reggae Albums Chart. In 2014, he left Aristokrat Records, and in 2015, he founded Spaceship Entertainment. He launched his new label with his second album, "On a Spaceship," on November 25, 2015. He then released his third studio album ‘Outside’ on January 26, 2018.

But 2019 was the year for him. It was the year the world welcomed him like a musical prince after releasing his all-time favourite track ‘On The Low’. In three years, 265 million people have streamed the song on YouTube. Burna Boy then released ‘Ye’ and ‘Gbona’ the same year – two other hits that amassed over 100 million views on YouTube.

In 2020, his fifth studio album ‘Twice as Tall’ earned him a nomination in the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards, under the World Music Album category which he won. He described this as an emotional moment because he couldn’t help but think of how far he has come to win such an award. His music is Afrofusion, which he describes as a mixture of Afrobeats, dancehall, R&B, and rap that he grew up listening to as a child. His albums are filled with the same pan-Africanist ideas as his music, a political and cultural philosophy that aims to connect and bind the people of Africa and their diaspora communities. This creative wit places him at the top of things musically.

Music gives the 30-year-old Nigerian singer a sense of purpose and he lives for it. His life is all about music and he thanks his family for solidifying his musical roots in such a big way.
