EXCLUSIVE: The Tale of 'Sing-To-Pay Bills' Artists - Lesson by Webi!

The old-fashioned way of making money in the music business is selling cds, which continues to be challenged by piracy.

Kenya Airtel Trace Music star winner Benjamin Webi.

Majority artists are on the receiving end especially those on rap/sing-to-pay-the-bills. But there’s still money out there, musicians just have to be creative in finding alternative revenue sources.

“Music has been part of my life and my only hustle. I flexed on daily and it’s the consistency that has kept me ahead winning".

Kenya Airtel Trace Music star winner Benjamin Webi reveals to Mdundo, ahead of his new single release on Monday, next week.

“I know many artists who solely depend on music as the main source of livelihood. These are levels everyone has to go through. You just need to focus and never give up”.

Right now Webi is Sh 2.7 million richer, courtesy of a ground breaking initiative by Airtel dubbed Airtel Trace Music Stars. It is the first mobile singing contest of its kind in Africa.

He is representing Kenya among 13 African countries, and stands a chance to win a recording deal with Kon Live, a distributed label through Universal Music Group, and an intense mentorship programme with American rapper Akon in the US. So don't forget to vote for him.

“I'll be releasing a new song on Monday called 'Nikuskize' to inspire those in relationships.

So what about the song?

“There's the smooth sailing side of love in romantic relationships but there's also the side that has challenges. This song is about and inspired by conflict in the said relationships and how things can be made better, when conflict happens. I want to do some grown folks music and talk about something that almost anyone can relate to”.

We’ll keep you posted on Mdundo as soon as the song is out and how to vote for him in the Airtel Trace Music Stars Pan African competition.
