Renowned Ugandan dancehall artist Kent from the music duo The Voltage Music has dismissed calls for artists to sell their rights as advocated by Ugatunes founder Gen. Salim Saleh.

Speaking during the launch of Ugatunes app a few weeks ago, Salim Saleh said the Ugandan music industry is not commercialized, therefore artists are earning less compared to their counterparts across the world. He divulges that he would be willing to buy music rights from artists open to the idea.

Reacting to Salim, Kent said he is not open to the idea, adding that music rights are part of the legacy an artist leaves behind.

"Personally, I would love to retain the rights for my music in that when my children grow up, I would like the to earn from it and take pride in the fact that their father was an artist. I want my generation to come to own my right," Kent said during an interview with Spark TV 21.

He, however, noted that his partner Flosso is open to choosing what he wants to do with his music.

"But if Flosso can decide to sell his rights and it is very okay, he can sell his 50% and I retain my percentage too," he said.

The duo is not registered under Uganda Musicians Association (UMA); a body aimed at bringing together Ugandan artists. According to Kent, they don't see the purpose of the group, claiming that it is too disorganized.
