Petrol scarcity continues to grow worse across the country as on Thursday, long queues were witnessed in different petrol stations in Abuja, Port Harcourt, Lagos, Calabar, Warri and many other places. The few filling stations which had petrol were mostly that of independent marketers and they sold at between N250 and N300. [The Punch]

The Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Ahmed Audi, on Thursday paid a condolence visit to the families of seven NSCDC officers who were ambushed by bandits in Birnin Gwari, Kaduna State. During the visit, he presented cheques of undisclosed amount of money to the next of kin of the families and also announced the approval of one employment slot for each family as a replacement for the deceased officers. Major Marketers Association of Nigeria, MOMAN has blamed the increasing petrol scarcity on increased cross border demand. Speaking in a phone conversation with The Nation, MOMAN Executive Secretary, Mr. Clement Isong, said the demand for petrol even from neighbouring countries is too high hence the continued scarcity. He also pointed out that NNPC’s supply is not enough to meet this demand. [The Nation]

Lagos state government has announced four work free days for civil servants to go and pick up their Permanent Voters Cards. Lagos Head of Service, Hakeem Muri-Okunola, disclosed this in a statement yesterday, confirming that the work free days will be from the 24th to the 27th of January 2023 for workers in different grade levels. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has asked healthcare workers to maintain a high index of suspicion for diphtheria by being vigilant and looking out for symptoms. In a public health advisory sent out on Thursday night, NCDC Director-General, Dr Ifedayo Adetifa said that the NCDC has responded to the cases in Lagos and Kano states. Data from the Kano State Ministry of Health also reveals 25 persons have so far died from diphtheria with 58 suspected cases and six persons on admission. [Daily Trust]

Despite the CBN directive to banks to make available the new naira notes to customers for withdrawal, many banks are still dispensing the old naira notes. With the January 31st deadline close, the CBN has asked Nigerians to reject the old notes from commercial banks. [Daily Trust]

Three persons were feared injured in a suspected explosion at the APC governorship rally in Rivers state. The incident which happened at the Ojukwu Field in Afikpo street Mile 1 Diobu Area of Port Harcourt was said to have been either an explosion from a dynamite or a card. [Nigerian Tribune]
