Good morning, this is Mdundo Newspaper Review 1-23-2023. Here’s a review of what the front pages of the newspapers in Nigeria are saying today. 

  • On Sunday 22nd of January 2023, a passenger train going from Warri to Itakpe Kogi state derailed, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded. However, the good news is that 148 passengers have now been safely transported to their destination. [Nigerian Tribune] 

 

  • Kano state commissioner for health, Dr Aminu Ibrahim Tsanyawa has confirmed that the state has recorded 100 suspected cases of diphtheria in 13 local governments. Speaking during a press conference to address the situation Dr Aminu revealed that out of the suspected cases, eight were confirmed to have diphtheria and three persons have also been confirmed dead from the disease.   • Kogi state governor, Yahaya Bello has debunked the news that he has withdrawn his support for APC’s presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics on Sunday, Yahaya Bello said that he and other northern leaders are solidly backing Tinubu to win the elections next month. He also called on INEC to investigate and charge media houses for spreading false news. [The Nation] 

 

  • The APC Presidential Campaign Council has reacted to the PDP’s call on the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) to investigate Tinubu. Speaking in a statement, the APC’s Presidential Campaign Council Director of Media and Publicity, Bayo Onanuga said Atiku has no moral standing to make such a request. He also said that the PDP’s presidential flag bearer has shown that he cannot be trusted to manage the resources of the country. [The Nation] 

 

  • A 300-level Federal University of Technology Akure student, Oluwapelumi Joseph Olona, has committed suicide. The Guardian gathered Joseph, who was the financial secretary of the department of Industrial Design, took his own life after being accused of mismanaging the department’s funds. [The Guardian] 

 

  • Residents of Ikem community in Isi Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State have called on the government to come to their aid to tackle the increasing activities of kidnapping in the area. In a week, gunmen had kidnapped at least six persons from the community. [The Guardian] 

 

  • Rivers state APC governorship candidate, Mr Tonye Cole has called on President Buhari to declare a state of emergency in the state. In a statement signed by the spokesman of the Rivers APC 2023 Campaign Council, Sogbeye Eli, Mr Cole said the Executive Orders 21 and 22 signed by Governor Nyesom Wike have brought about violence in the state and declaring a state of emergency will bring a stop to the chaos.
