Good morning, this is Mdundo Newspaper Review 1-27-2023. Here’s a review of what the front pages of the newspapers in Nigeria are saying today. 

- Speaker, House of Reps Femi Gbajabiamila is looking to meet President Muhammadu Buhari over the insistence of the CBN on its January 31st deadline for phasing out old naira notes. The CBN governor has for the second time failed to honour the invitation for a dialogue between the CBN and the members of an Ad hoc committee set up by the House of Reps. Femi Gbajabiamila has now said that he might have no other option than to implore relevant sections of the law for the police to force the CBN Governor to appear before the House. [The Nation] 

- 324 civil servants in Ondo State are at risk of being declared as ghost workers if they fail to sort out issues with their Personal Identification Number before the 15th of February 2023. In a circular signed by the Permanent Secretary/DG of the Ondo State Pension Commission, Mr O. S. Akingbesote the issues affecting the workers were revealed to be against the State's amended 2014 Pension Law. [The Nation] 

- As the January 31st deadline draws close, businesses in Lagos State have now started rejecting old naira notes for fear of being caught up with old notes on the deadline day. Speaking at the recent Monetary Policy Committee meeting in Abuja, the CBN Governor Emefiele maintained that the deadline date will not be moved also adding that the CBN together with the Presidency felt that 100 days was enough for people who had old notes to deposit them in their various banks. - Youths in Edo State yesterday, blocked the Lagos-Benin Expressway at Oluku Junction to protest the current fuel scarcity and hike in the price of the product. Travellers who were on their way to Lagos for business and various other reasons were left stranded for hours due to the protest. [The Sun]

- Yesterday, goods worth millions of naira were lost as fire razed a five-storey building on Gbajumo Street, Balogun Market, in Lagos Island, Lagos State. Eyewitnesses say that the fire started at about 11 pm on Wednesday. Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service were said to have arrived at the scene and struggled to put out the fire till 4pm on Thursday. - Youths in Katsina State yesterday took their grievances out at President Muhammadu Buhari who was in the state on a two-day official visit to inaugurate some of the state’s projects. The youths staged a protest just after the President inaugurated the Kofar Kaura Underpass in Katsina. The protesters who were decrying the hardship in the country caused chaos at the Kofar Kaura Underpass where they threw stones shortly after the President left the area. [The Punch] 

- The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, yesterday revealed that there were 66 unsuccessful attempts from Europe to hack into virtual meetings of the Federal Executive Council. Speaking in Abuja at the 19th edition of the President Muhammadu Buhari (PMB) Administration Scorecard Series (2015-2023) Pantami said all the cases were reported to the appropriate authorities for record and actions. - Barely four days to the deadline for withdrawing old naira notes, banks are at a shortage of the new notes. Daily Trust confirms that some commercial banks in Abuja against the CBN directive still give old naira notes to customers for over-the-counter withdrawal while very few ATMs dispense the new notes.
