Who is Ketchup?
Onyido Nkemjika, popularly known as Ketchup, is a Nigerian singer and songwriter. The 37-year-old music star was born and raised in Lagos state. The singer, the firstborn in a family of four, discovered his talent and passion for music at a very early age. It is documented that the songster’s love for music stemmed from his late father who was a fan of the legendary singer Bob Marley. He also drew his inspiration from other renowned musicians such as Ebenezer Obe, Sir Sina Peters, and Shakademus among many others.

The singer has an impressive educational background. He received his Secondary school education at St Leos School before he joined Federal Government College Ijanikin. He then studied for a degree course in Mass communication from the University of Malaysia.

Ketchup is known for being flexible with various music genres. Among the top genres that he is widely known for are Afropop, Afrobeats, and Afrodancehall. He ventured into music officially in 2010 with his debut song ‘Nuvo’ featuring Dj Jam Jam. The track was met with an extremely warm reception in the music industry. The success of the song saw him win the prestigious Malaysian AEA Awards.

The singer moved back to his home country Nigeria after successfully making his debut in music. He proceeded to cement his rise to stardom with another hit song titled ‘On The Beat’ in collaboration with Rayce. The song too accrued immense success and dominated various music charts. His big moves on the music scene saw him meet with celebrated music producer EmmyAce with whom he produced the viral club banger ‘Show Me Yuh Rozay. This was one of the biggest that he had ever released at the time.

‘Show Me Yuh Rozay became a national anthem across Nigeria and the whole of West Africa. It officially made the singer one of the best artists on the Nigerian music scene. At one point, Ketchup admitted that the song stretched his popularity to foreign countries such as Jamaica. It also popularised dancehall which was at the time a new genre in Africa. The song dominated music charts for months both within and beyond Nigeria.

In 2016, Ketchup suffered major setbacks that decelerated his growth in the music industry. He reportedly got involved in a dreadful accident while celebrating his birthday in Dubai. The accident led him to take a break from music for a while. He consequently remained silent for some time. His fans got concerned about his whereabouts. In a past interview, the music star revealed that a surgery he had received and the loss of his father pushed him to the edge and he could no longer concentrate on music.

Ketchup has grown to serve as a role model and source of inspiration to many upcoming artists. A good number of rising stars find motivation in his style of music and success in the industry.
