CYNTHIA MORGAN BIOGRAPHY
Cynthia Ikponmwenosa Morgan simply known as Cynthia Morgan is a Nigerian singer and songwriter who now goes by the moniker Madrina.
She was born and raised in Benin, Edo state south-south Nigeria. She started music at the very young age of three and at that age, she was already a backup singer for her mother’s band. According to several reports, Cynthia Morgan grew up in a single-parent household as her father reportedly abandoned her mum who was twenty years of age at the time of her pregnancy. She was raised single-handedly by her mother who was a very well-known gospel musician in Benin city. Because of her early introduction to music, she started writing and recording her own songs at just seven years old. During her secondary school education, she was the leader of her school choir.
At the age of seventeen, she recorded her first ever single titled “Dutty Stepping.” The record featured General Pype and gave her the much-needed motivation she needed to leave Benin City for Lagos in pursuit of greener pastures. Her decision paid off as it didn’t take long for her to be signed to Northside Entertainment Inc owned by Jude Okoye, former manager and elder brother of legendary twin duo, Psquare.
Under Northside Entertainment Inc, she soon made her mark with two singles “Don’t Break My Heart” and “Lead Me On.” The success of the two records put her in the conversation as one of the hottest female Nigerian artists in the years 2014 and 2015 consecutively.
With her records, she displayed a lot of versatility with her sound being mainly dancehall, she was able to infuse elements of Afropop, pop, hip-hop, rap and other genres with her distinct and impressive patois accent in her lyrics to match. She earned her first nomination with the record “Lead Me On” which was nominated for the Best Reggae-Dancehall Song at the 2014 Headies Awards.
In her award shelf, she has Best New Artist - South South Music Awards (2014), ELOY Awards Music Artist of the Year (2014), South-South Music Awards Best Reggae/Dancehall (2015), South-South Music Awards Best Reggae Single and others. She also has numerous award nominations among them is the nomination for the Next Rated Artist Headies 2015, nomination for the Female Artist of The Year at the 2015 Nigeria Entertainment Awards and Ben TV awards nomination for Best Newcomer, Best Hip-Hop Female Artist, and Best Reggae/Dancehall Artist in 2014.
After a few years with Northside Entertainment Inc, Cynthia Morgan parted ways with the label. A few years later returned with a new moniker, changing her name from Cynthia Morgan to Madrina and also dropping a brand new single audio with an accompanying video titled “Billion Dollar Woman”. The new single was released under her own imprint TCMC short for The Cynthia Morgan Company. For the record, she linked up with her goto producer, Tony Ross. The video for Billion Dollar Woman garnered over a hundred thousand views on the video-sharing platform, YouTube and was shared via her own YouTube channel which has since gained over three thousand subscribers.
In March 2022, Madrina shared the story behind the video for her popular record “Simati Niya” which featured Burna Boy as a guest appearance. Responding to fans who wanted to know how she got to use Burna Boy as a “video vixen” in her video, Madrina revealed that at the time Burna Boy was a big artist and she insisted on using him against the direction of her label boss, Jude Okoye. She further explained that her insistence to use Burna Boy as a model for the video and not listen to her boss almost cost her her record deal.
