International Women’s Day
Entertainment & Learning - Mdundo Podcast
Lyrics
It’s that time of the year again where we get to celebrate our women and continue to champion for gender equality. International Women's Day (IWD), a global testament to the ongoing fight for gender equality and women's empowerment is finally upon us. But just how much do you know about international women’s day? It’s Origin dates back to the early 20th century, as the first National Woman's Day was observed in the United States in 1909 by women who demanded better pay and the right to vote. In 1910, German socialist Clara Zetkin proposed the idea of an annual International Women's Day, which was first celebrated on March 19, 1911. Since 1913, it has been commemorated on March 8, with rallies, demonstrations, and celebrations held worldwide. Every year’s celebration has a theme attached to it to sensitize women on the importance of the day. This year's theme for International Women's Day is "Inspire Inclusion" and It emphasizes the importance of Inclusion to create a sense of belonging, relevance and empowerment for women. Theme colors purple, green, and white are also used on the day. Purple symbolizes justice and dignity, green represents hope, and white signifies purity and light. International Women's Day serves as a reminder of the progress made and the work that still lies ahead in achieving gender equality worldwide. We at Mdundo wish you a happy International Women’s Day as we celebrate the achievements of women and continue to strive for an equal future for all.View more
