Portugal has appointed Roberto Martinez as its new coach following the exit of Fernando Santos. The appointment comes after Portugal suffered a humiliating defeat to Morrocco in the 2022 World Cup quarter-finals in Qatar. The majority of fans expressed disappointment in the team's performance, with many criticizing Fernando Santos' coaching techniques.

Fernando Santos while stepping down pointed out that the resolution to end his six-year reign with Portugal was not influenced by the criticism. The 49-year-old revealed that he had prior plans to retire regardless of Portugal's performance in the World Cup.

Roberto Martinez has stated that he plans to contact Cristiano Ronaldo to discuss his future in the team. He explained that he will exercise a different approach with the team starting with reaching out to all the players.

"My starting point is to meet them all today, to contact all the players. The list of 26 players from the last World Cup is my starting point, and Cristiano is a player on that list. He has been in the national team for 19 years and he deserves the respect to sit down and talk. And tomorrow we will start talking and getting to know each other, and Cristiano is one of them," the former Belgium coach stated.

Will Roberto Martinez live up to the expectations? Will he be the man to lead Portugal back to its glory days? Only time will tell.
