When second-placed Barcelona visit Real Sociedad on Thursday night, they will be looking to get back on track in La Liga.

Real Sociedad are fifth in the league, five points behind fourth-placed Atlético Madrid.

Sociedad has not finished higher than fifth in La Liga since finishing fourth in 2013, although they are in contention for a top-four finish this season, as they are currently in sixth place, five points behind fourth-placed Atlético Madrid.

Since falling 4-1 to Real Madrid at the start of March, the Basque side has picked up 11 points from their past five games, including a 0-0 draw with fifth-placed Real Betis on Friday night.

Sociedad will need to win the bulk of their remaining six league games to finish in the top four, and they have three relatively easy games following this one, facing Rayo Vallecano, Levante, and Cadiz before meeting Villarreal and Atlético in their final two league games.

Sociedad has been strong in front of their home crowd this season, picking up 32 points from 16 games and winning nine of them, but they will be facing a Barcelona team that has the second-best away record in Spain's top flight, with 28 points from 16 games.

In addition, Sociedad has lost nine of their past 10 league games against Barcelona and has not beaten them in Spain's top flight since April 2016, indicating the magnitude of their job in this encounter.

Barcelona won seven consecutive league games between February 20 and April 10, putting them in second place in the table, but they were shocked to lose 1-0 at home to Cadiz on Monday night.

Barcelona is still in second place in the rankings, 15 points behind leaders Real Madrid with one game in hand, but they are level on points with third-placed Sevilla and fourth-placed Atlético.

Meanwhile, Xavi's squad were surprised by Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League quarter-finals at home last week, so it has not been a good few days for the team, which will likely conclude the season without a trophy unless Real Madrid has a stunning collapse.

On Thursday evening, Barcelona will be anxious to get back on track, but Real Sociedad is a team to be taken seriously, especially at home. The Basque team will also be the fresher of the two, increasing the chances of a draw, which would widen the top-four race even further.

Betting on Real Sociedad and Barcelona to end in a draw comes with an impressive odds of 3.64.

If you want to go for a more conservative outcome, bet on the game-ending with over 2.5 goals, which comes at a modest 1.88 odd.

But if you decide to combine both – a draw and over 2.5 goals – like I would probably be doing, then that comes with a humongous odd of 12.00.
