New, fresh, and fast-rising rappers are creating a new evolution to the existing genre in the Ghanaian music scene. Inspired by the late American star Pop Smoke, young rappers famously known as ‘Kumericans’  have taken a step further to embracing the rap genre called drill.

Ghanaian drill/ Asakaa drill as it is called has been popularised as the go-to vibe, for any upcoming rapper in Ghana and older rappers are steady in the pressure of tapping into this sound so as to remain relevant. 

We review top Kumericans who are currently flying the flag of Ghana drill. 

Asaka Boys

The group came to prominence earlier last year and has made a huge impact on the popularization of the sound. The group consists of Jay Bahd, Kawabanga, O’Kenneth, City Boy, Kwaku DMC, Reggie, Sean Lifer, Braa Benk, and Rabby Jones.

Whether as a group or on their solo projects, their records have been making airwaves. They are known for their songs like ‘Y3 Y3 Dom’,’ Condemn’.

Yaw Tog

Self-declared as Young Bull, the 18-year-old rapper already has impressive achievements and is set for major accomplishments in the years to come. He was able to link up with UK rapper Stormzy and Kwesi Arthur for the remix of his monster hit record Sore, which surpassed 1million mark views in just under 3 days after release. 

He also got to bag the Best Hip Hop song at the 2021 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.

Amerado

Born and raised in Kumasi, Amerado has been able to curve his music career incredibly well by producing hits relatable to the country’s daily issues. His hit records include ‘I am, ‘We Outside’. He was nominated in the Best Rap Performance category in the 2021 VGMA.

Ypee

Ypee is one of the many artists, who is flying the flag of Ghana drill. Though he was in the scene way back before the entry of the new wave, he gained major recognition with the drill genre. He is known for bangers like Kumerica, Botom, Shishi and has worked with Sarkodie, Medikal.

Kweku Flick

He made an appearance alongside Yaw Tog and Amerado on Tim Westwood’s show in the UK. He was featured on Shatta Wale’s Ahodwo Las Vegas record with other rappers.
