The future of Afro-pop in Africa is bright and unavoidable. This is an affirmation by South African record producer and singer Master KG.
Master KG recently caught up with AFP in one of his trips to France and ascertained that his hit song ‘Jerusalema’ was testament of Africa’s greatness lying in wait. To date, he still can’t believe that Jerusalema broke the ceiling to become a global hit that became a sensation in the middle of Covid-19 pandemic.

His life changed so much just because of the song that he collaborated with songstress Nomcebo Zikode. "Yes, 'Jerusalema' changed my life,” he says. "When I look at the statistics, the numbers, it always surprises me, no one could have predicted this,” he added.
‘Jerusalema’ has 424 million streams on YouTube so far. He is grateful that the song will generate revenue for him for the rest of his life.
According to Master KG, ‘Jerusalema’ was an eye opener for him that African music is the next big the international stage should be ready for. In particular, he notes that Afro-pop and Afro-beat have put Africa on the right path to success.
“We're just getting started. We're getting on the right path ... with Afro-beat and Afro-pop, we will hear more and more African artists around the planet - there is room for everyone.” This, Master KG remarks, is one of the ways through which Africa is telling her story and culture to the rest of the world.
