Omah Lay, Tems Charged In Ugandan Court, Remanded

Two youthful Nigerian artists Omah Lay and Tems were on Monday, December 14, charged before a Makindye court, in Uganda after they were arrested over the weekend.
The two alongside Tems’ manager Muyiwa Awomiyi were arrested after performing in a concert at The Big Brunch, which was held at Speke Resort, Wavamunno Rd, Kampala, Uganda.
According to a tweet by the Uganda Police Force, Omah Lay, Tems and Awomiyi faced charges of negligently doing acts likely to spread coronavirus.
“The Nigerian trio of Stanley Omah Didia alias Omah Lay, Temilade Openyi alias Tems and Muyiwa Awomiyi have been charged to court in Makindye on charges of Negligently doing acts likely to spread an infectious diseases C/S 171 of the Penal Code Act,” read a tweet from the Ugandan Police Force.
The three were charged alongside four other Ugandan citizens with the police saying earlier plans to release them were suspended after their prosecution was approved by the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP).
Omah Lay, Tems and her manager will now be forced to spend two more days in police cells.
“The earlier plans of releasing them on police bond were suspended after their casefile was sanctioned by the Office of the DPP. They were jointly charged with four other Ugandans. All remanded till Wednesday 16.12.2020,” read a second tweet from the Uganda Police Force.
The arrest of Omah Lay and Tems has sparked an uproar among several Nigerian artists who teamed up to demand their release under the hashtags #FreeOmahLay #FreeTems.
In a series of tweets on Monday, Omah Lay accused the Uganda Government of unlawfully detaining him.
“Why am I being detained? Why am I not been given a right to a fair hearing?” he said in one one of the tweets adding that; “Why is Uganda not letting @NigeriaMFA step into this? They have been trying to secure our release to no avail.”
