With over 2.3 million calls in season one of the Airtel TRACE Music Star competition, numbers that are touted to be overwhelming even for popular American talent shows like Idol and The Voice, it’s no wonder it was voted the best pan-African initiative.
And for season two already things are looking much bigger. With over 600,000 contestants from the 10 African states participating already registered to the competition.
A look at last year’s winner Mayunga from Tanzania already tells you everything you need to know about the seriousness of the Airtel TRACE Music Star competition.
After a brief stint in the mentorship of pop star Akon, Mayunga released his first music video ‘Nice Couple’ in August last year.
The video which was shot in Johannesburg, a top video shoot destination for some of the biggest international stars from Africa and beyond, the likes of Ali Kiba, Diamond, Davido among many others.
So you already know it is an amazing video to begin with. However you will even notice the difference in the singing of Mayunga in the song after his mentorship with Akon.
He sounds more confident in the way he delivers and one can see that he is destined for greater things.
Well I guess it’s only fitting you become the best after being trained with the best. And this year one of America’s top female RnB singer’s Keri Hilson, will be taking over mentorship from Akon, and going by the number of hits and Grammy nominations under her belt, for sure even established music stars can learn something from her.
