NIGERIA: Why Davido is Starting His Own Music Label 'Davido Music Worldwide' Despite Huge Success With Brother's HKN Label
25 April 2016

It has been a great year for Nigerian Afropop star Davido. First a million dollar distribution deal with Sony Music Entertainment, which saw him become the first African artist to have his music distributed globally by the multinational music company.
Now the artist has officially announced that he has started his own record label dubbed, Davido Music Worldwide.
However it is this latest move that has sparked controversy with many now saying that he could be leaving his HKN Music Label which he co-owns with his brother Wale Adeleke.
Davido made this announcement on Sunday, April 24 unveiling his official company logo, as well as its official page and quoting the post with the word “MOVEMENT!!!!! @dmw_hq”.

He’s already signed two artists, Mayorkun and Dremo who are new comers, to his new label. However as to the news that he’s leaving his former HKN Label for good, it should be said that this is a complete farce.
Earlier this year, Davido had revealed that he would be starting his own record label, a move which at the time he said was necessary for the Sony Music Entertainment distribution deal to go through.
“I cannot sign an international deal without a company. Since I cannot sign as Davido, I registered the ‘Davido Worldwide Music’ label. It is a company managed separately by myself, my manager, my executive producer and HKN for my international endeavors,” he said.
“The Sony deal doesn’t affect HKN label in any way. Sony Music relates with Davido’s new record label for the international market. Don’t go and write Davido leaves HKN because I don’t want my brothers to come after me,” he added.
