KENYA: Kenya's Lupita Nyong'o Weighs in on Race Issue in 2016 Oscars #OscarsSoWhite
21 January 2016

The 2016 Oscars have stirred up a lot of criticism from part of the Hollywood fraternity (mainly the people of color) who feel that these year’s nominations were made purely on racial bias.
Out of all the Nominees selected by the Oscars committee there were no blacks which has now led to some of the industry’s biggest stars, the likes of Jada Pinkett Smith, Kevin Hart, Spike Lee and many others boycotting this year’s Oscars.
This is of course despite the fact there were several black actors and movies that were released in 2015 case in point ‘Straight Out of Compton’ which received rave reviews from viewers and even the harshest of critics which only got one nomination, and the nominee was white.
Complaints also revolved around the movies ‘Beast of No Nation’ starring Idris Elba and ‘Creed’ starring Sylvester Stallone and Michael B. Jordan.
For his incredible role as an African War Lord Idris Elba got no nomination and only Sylvester Stallone got a nomination despite the fact Michael B. Jordan the main actor of the highly rated movie ‘Creed’.
And of course Twitter also had it’s say in the trending topic #OscarsSoWhite...

Kenya’s own Lupita Nyong’o who was among the biggest surprise winners of the 2014 Oscars, winning the award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the movie ’12 Years a Slave’, has also found it a bit hard to take.
“I am disappointed by the lack of inclusion in this year’s Academy Award nominations. It has me thinking about unconscious prejudice and what merits prestige in our culture. The Awards should not dictate the terms of art in our modern society, but rather be a diverse reflection of the best of what our art has to offer today. I stand with my peers who are calling for change in expanding the stories that are told and recognition of the people who tell them,” wrote Lupita.
