In 1924, with the support of His Highness Sir Sultan Muhammad Shah Aga Khan III and the philanthropic efforts of Vazir Bundeh Ali Kassim, the Janbai Maternity Home was established in Kharadar, Karachi, Pakistan. This humble beginning laid the foundation for what would become a network of renowned healthcare institutions under the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN).

The Janbai Maternity Home initially focused on providing maternity care, but it gradually expanded its services to encompass a wider range of medical needs. In 1958, the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) was established in Nairobi, Kenya, further expanding the Aga Khan Health Services (AKHS) network.

Over the years, AKHS has played a pivotal role in shaping the healthcare landscape in East Africa. With a commitment to providing accessible, affordable, and high-quality healthcare, AKHS has established a network of 14 hospitals and medical centers, 375+ health centers, and diagnostic centers across Kenya, Tanzania, Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Syria.

AKHS's impact extends beyond providing direct medical care. The organization has made significant contributions to medical education and research, establishing the Aga Khan University (AKU) as a leading center for academic excellence in healthcare. AKU's graduates have gone on to become influential medical professionals, contributing to the advancement of healthcare in their respective countries.

The Aga Khan Hospital, a key component of the AKHS network, has consistently maintained a reputation for providing exceptional patient care, incorporating cutting-edge technology and expertise. The hospital has been accredited by international organizations, such as the Joint Commission International, and has earned recognition for its innovative practices and patient-centered approach.

As AKHS continues to expand its reach and services, the Aga Khan Hospital remains a symbol of hope and healing for communities in East Africa and beyond. Its rich history, rooted in compassion, innovation, and excellence, continues to shape the future of healthcare in the region.
