Pius Mayanja, better known in the music industry as Pallaso, is no stranger to the spotlight. As the mastermind behind hits like 'Malamu' and 'Amaaso,' Pallaso has carved a prominent niche for himself in the vibrant Ugandan music scene. Yet, what much might not know is the crucial role his elder brother, the legendary Jose Chameleone, played in shaping his journey from obscurity to musical stardom.

In a candid conversation with Crystal Newman, Pallaso opened up about the invaluable lessons he gained from his brother Jose Chameleone, and how this mentorship was instrumental in preventing costly mistakes that could have derailed his budding music career.

"Growing up around him," Pallaso reflects, "it's very expensive to learn from your own mistakes, and some of the mistakes that would have cost me a fortune, I've learned from him." It's a simple yet profound truth that underscores the significance of mentorship in the music industry. Chameleone's guidance allowed Pallaso to navigate treacherous waters with a sense of purpose and foresight.

The wisdom didn't end with his brother alone. Pallaso recognized the value of learning from Chameleone's friends as well. This open-minded approach allowed him to absorb a wealth of knowledge and experience from the musical circles that surrounded his family.

By 2002, the young and aspiring artist found himself under the roof of Chameleone's burgeoning studio. It was here that he received his first lessons in the art of recording songs, a skill that would prove indispensable in his journey to becoming a notable musician. He didn't just limit himself to the studio; Chameleone also provided opportunities for him to perform on stage, honing his skills as a live performer.

Pallaso's musical journey commenced at a remarkably early age. Even as an 11-year-old, he was already gracing stages with his presence. His very first stage performance took place in a club in Kawempe, where he mimed a song by Tanto Mentro and Devonte. The enthusiastic response from the audience kindled his passion for performing, driving him to start writing his songs.

His deep-seated interest in music only grew. By the turn of the millennium, he had already started laying the foundation for his music career, affectionately adopting the moniker 'Lizard.' The journey, however, wasn't without its detours and challenges.

Relocating to the United States while still in S.5 posed a substantial shift in his life. Yet, his passion for music remained undiminished. While in the U.S., he recorded his debut album, aptly titled 'Change,' which saw its release in 2013. It was a clear indication that no distance or circumstance could deter him from his musical ambitions.

Pallaso's breakthrough moment came in 2014 when he joined forces with Radio and Weasel, who were in the United States for the BET Awards. The result of this collaboration was the chart-topping hit 'Amaaso.' The song's tremendous popularity encouraged Pallaso to return to Uganda the same year, with a renewed focus on his music career.

His journey, from a young boy who mimed songs in a Kawempe club to a star celebrated for hits like 'Malamu,' exemplifies the power of mentorship and perseverance in the music industry.

His story serves as an inspiration to budding artists, demonstrating that with the right guidance, hard work, and a passion for music, even a 'Lizard' can evolve into a celebrated artist gracing the airwaves and stages of the world. Jose Chameleone's mentorship was indeed the foundation upon which Pallaso built his musical empire, and his remarkable success is a testament to the profound impact of family, mentorship, and unwavering determination in the realm of music.
