Tundu Lissu Early Life and Education

Born on January 20, 1968, in Ikungi, Singida, Tanzania, Tundu Antiphas Mughwai Lissu grew up in a humble but supportive household. His father, a respected teacher, instilled in him a strong sense of discipline and a passion for education.

Lissu's educational pursuits began at Ikungi Primary School and later at Singida Secondary School, where he excelled in his studies. His academic achievements earned him a place at the prestigious University of Dar es Salaam, where he pursued a law degree.

After graduating from the University of Dar es Salaam, Lissu embarked on a distinguished legal career. He worked as a lawyer for the Legal Services Commission and later joined the Lawyers Environmental Action Team (LEAT), where he championed environmental protection and advocated for the rights of indigenous communities.

Tundu Lissu Political Career and Opposition Leadership

Lissu's passion for justice extended beyond the courtroom into the political arena. He joined the Chadema political party, becoming its Chief Legal Officer and a member of the Tanzanian Parliament from 2010 to 2020.

As a member of Parliament, Lissu was a fierce critic of the government, exposing corruption, advocating for transparency, and speaking out against human rights abuses. His outspoken activism and unwavering commitment to democratic principles made him a thorn in the side of the ruling party.

Tundu Lissu Assassination Attempts and Exile

Lissu's fearless advocacy came at a personal cost. In 2017, he survived an assassination attempt, leaving him with multiple bullet wounds. Undeterred, he continued to speak out against the government, exposing corruption and human rights abuses.
In 2020, Lissu was once again targeted, this time in a brazen attack that left him critically injured. As he recovered in Belgium, the government cracked down on dissent, banning political rallies and stifling opposition voices.
Despite the risks, Lissu refused to be silenced. He continued to speak out from exile, using his platform to expose the government's abuses and advocate for democratic reform.
Return to Tanzania and Continued Advocacy
In January 2023, after the lifting of the ban on political rallies, Lissu returned to Tanzania. His homecoming was met with jubilation and renewed hope for many Tanzanians who yearn for a more just and democratic society.

Since his return, Lissu has continued to be a vocal critic of the government, calling for greater transparency, accountability, and respect for human rights. He has rallied supporters, reinvigorated the opposition, and given a voice to those who have been marginalized and silenced.

Tundu Lissu Family Life and Personal Pursuits

Despite his demanding political career, Lissu remains devoted to his family. He is married to Alice Magabe, a fellow lawyer and human rights activist, and they have two children together.

In his spare time, Lissu enjoys reading, writing, and spending time with his family. He is also a passionate football fan and an avid supporter of the Tanzanian national team, the Taifa Stars.
