Kenyan music lovers have been treated to one-of-a-kind entertainment with artists starting the year with top-ranking songs. Being the first month of the year, the majority of established artists invested in releasing high-quality music. A good number of the musicians expressed diversity and extreme creativity in the new releases given the stiff competition in the industry.

Whereas most of the artists performed well on various music charts, there were those that dominated the whole month with their songs going viral online. Here are the five Kenyan artists who dominated the month of January.

Boutross

Rapper and songwriter Boutross dominated the airwaves courtesy of the viral 'Angela' hit song featuring Juicee Mann. The song whose audio was released late last year shot back to the top of the trending chart after its music video premiered on 3rd January. The song has amassed enormous success and gained over one million views on YouTube within three weeks of its release. The blend of Dancehall and Hip-Hop marinated with Gengetone vibes made the song a masterpiece.

Bahati

Shortly after announcing that 2023 would be the best year in his music career, Bahati surprised his fans with a vernacular love song dubbed 'Nowe Sweety' featuring celebrated Kikuyu songster Joyce Wa Mamaa. What made the song outstanding was Bahati's fluency in the Kikuyu language. The song's versatility in the production from the beats to the lyrics made it unique. Music producer Teddy B modernized the Mugithi genre by infusing new generation beats into the song. The track surpassed the half-a-million views mark within 48 hours of its release on YouTube.

King Kaka

The 'Swahili Shakespeare' hitmaker went into record as the first Kenyan artist to release an album in 2023. His 2nd Life album which was released in the first week of the year earned a good playtime on digital and mainstream media. The 16-track music project brought together celebrated musicians from different countries. 12 of the songs were collaborations that featured veterans and new artists. Many are anxious to see if King Kaka will maintain the tempo throughout the whole year.

Willy Paul

The Multi-award-winning singer revealed that he invested heavily in his latest song 'Umeme', which has since its publication on YouTube gained close to a million views. Celebrated Tanzanian music geniuses Kimambo and Lizer Classic brought out the best of Willy Paul in the production of the audio. The music video, on the other hand, was extremely eye-catching with a well-choreographed dance routine.

Stevo Simple Boy

Stevo Simple Boy gave his fans a new flavor of music in his newest release titled 'Haya Basi''. From the flow of the rap to the lyrism of the song, everything about the track was extremely versatile. The rapper, who is popular for educative songs, switched the content of his song and for the first time opened up about his life as a celebrity. Stevo Simple Boy addressed various reports revolving around his brand. He further gave his fans a sneak preview of his personal life.
