Celebrated Nigerian songstress Tems has just landed a 2023 Oscar awards nomination.

The nomination means she is the first Nigerian to ever get an Oscar nomination. Tems received a nomination for her work as a songwriter on "Lift Me Up” by Rihanna the soundtrack for Marvel's Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Since the release of her Anti album in 2016, Rihanna has taken time off music and she made a return with "Lift Me Up" which she co-wrote with Tems. It followed their meeting at the New York Savage x Fenty in September 2021.

Tems said that she had a conversation with Black Panther director Ryan Coogler about the film and she was interested in partly writing ‘Lift Me Up’ as a tribute to the people she has lost in life. She wanted a song that brings out the aspect of embracing everyone because that is what makes the world a better place.

The 2023 Oscar voting period is from March 2 until March 7. Jimmy Kimmel, a comedian and talk show host, will preside over the 2023 Oscar ceremony, which is scheduled to take place on Sunday, March 12 at the Dolby Theater.

Tems’ 2023 Oscar Awards nomination follows her earlier 2023 Grammy awards nomination with her feature on Future's "Wait For U" under the Best Melodic Rap Performance category.
