Madrid's policy to wait until a foreign player is 13 prevented him from making a permanent switch at the time. He also had trials with Boca Juniors before he joined River Plate from the local side Atletico Calchin in 2016.

Since joining River Plate, Alvarez has won the Copa Libertadores, Copa Argentina and Primera Argentina, among other trophies.  He was the Primera Division's top scorer in 2021 with 20 goals in 35 games, at the same time he was named the South American Footballer of the Year.

The youngster primarily plays as a forward and he managed 24 goals and 18 assists in 46 appearances in 2021.
