Chelsea – one of the most successful and richest clubs in world football – are up for sale after Abramovich came under increased pressure following his alleged connections to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

But one problem that stands in the way of a new owner buying the London-based football club is the high asking price put up by Abramovich.

Abramovich reportedly wants close to £3 million, but back in April 2021 Forbes valued Chelsea at £2.4 billion. That was, however, before the Blues won another Champions League title. They have since gone on to secure the FIFA Club World Cup and their value would have shot up way above the April 2021 rating.

Since Abramovich bought the club in 2003, Chelsea have won every available trophy they have competed for. The Blues have won the English Premier League five times, the FA Cup five times, the League Cup thrice, and the Community Shield twice. They have also won two UEFA Champions League titles, two Europa League honours, one UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup they bagged a few weeks ago.

Since 2003, Abramovich has pumped £1.5 billion into the Blues and is keen on recouping all of that money and more as part of the sale, which explains why his asking price is supposedly too much for some prospective buyers.

It must be noted that all that money has gone into signing first team players and Chelsea’s current squad is valued at close to a billion pounds.

So it is probably understandable why the 55-year-old, who reportedly has a net worth of around £9.4 billion, has so far refused any offers that have been below his expectations.

But with reports suggesting the Russian billionaire is keen on finalising a deal, then he may have little option but to accept a slightly lower offer than what he has requested.

When that happens – and it seems very certain that it would happen – fans of Chelsea all over the world would definitely be saddened that the man who transformed the Blues from an above average English club into a global brand will no longer be a regular sight at Stamford Bridge, home of the Pride of London.
