On the social media network TikTok, Amapiano received 1.6 billion views this year, with hits by Cassper Nyovest, DJ Maphorisa, Tyler ICU, Boohle, and DJ Sumbody being ranked among the most popular.

According to the latest data from TikTok, the local genre became the most popular music in South Africa in 2021, with more than 1 billion active users internationally during the same time period.

Cassper Nyovest's ‘Siyathandana’ featuring Boohle and Abidoza was the most popular song, followed by DJ Maphorisa and Tyler ICU's ‘Banyana’ and DJ Sumbody's ‘Iyamemeza’ featuring Drip Gogo and The Lowkeys.

“It's been incredible to see how Mzansi has continued to grow and support one another this year on the platform. We've seen trends such as the recent Love Nwantiti and #Amapiano started and spread across ‘For You’ feeds on the app,” Boniswa Sidwaba, TikTok content operations manager in Africa said.

Sidwaba said that seeing all this makes it so humbling for the platform even as the video platform prepares to release the global music report on December 13.

The Africa TikTok manager said the continent supported the platform well in 2021 and it is interesting sharing in the laughter and learning new things about different cultures.
