South Africa’s revered DJ Black Coffee has earned a Grammy nomination. Black Coffee's album ‘Subconsciously’ got a slot in the Best Dance/Electronic Music Album category.

The 64th annual Grammy awards will go down on January 31, 2022, and will be streamed live by CBS.

Born Nkosinathi Innocent Litiya Maphumulo, DJ Black Coffee has contributed so much to South Africa’s music industry. His career as a record producer, singer and songwriter goes way back to 1994.

In his early days, he was a top DJ, a passion that saw him stay on for years until 2004 when he became so prominent. Since then, he became a household name in South Africa with his mixing prowess.

By then, he had a few songs out, with one of his most popular songs being ‘Happiness’ which he released at around 2004. In 2005, he remixed ‘Stimela’ by Hugh Masekela and it created a platform for him to release his debut album and formed his record company.

In 2005, he released his debut album ‘Black Coffee’ where he featured veteran artists such as Busi Mhlongo, Masekela and Thandisawa Mazwai.

He released his second album ‘Have Another One’ in 2007 following the huge success with his first studio album. By then, he had penetrated the South African DJ industry and was already household name.

In 2009, he released his third studio album ‘Home Brewed’. He had featured big artistes in the industry such as Ringo Madlingozi, Zakes Bantwini, Zonke and Masekela. Some of the songs in the album went platinum and gold in terms of the sales.

In 2011, ‘Africa Rising’, his fourth album was launched in Durban, in an event full of pomp and colour. The album was a huge success, just like with his three other albums that it made it to the platinum category with double sales recorded by 2012.

Between then and 2015 when he started his world tour, he featured in many high flying events that elevated him even more. In 2015, he released his fifth studio album ‘Pieces of Me’ which also went to platinum. He featured big names such as Ribatone, Azola, Mondli Ngcobo among others.

In 2017, he was featured by by Drake in his album as well as David Guetta; who he collaborated with in his ‘Drive’ song.

In 2019, DJ Black Coffee featured American RnB star usher in his ‘LaLaLa’ single.
