Mejja vs King Kaka: Who is the King of Storytelling?

For years, both King Kaka and Mejja have utilized their story-telling talents to deliver creative music which uniquely sets them apart from the crowd. In King Kaka’s case, he prefers to use of spoken word which gives him enough space to deliver hard-hitting truths with little to no sound effects. Some of King Kaka’s fan favorite storytelling jams include; ‘Wajinga Nyinyi’ and the ‘Dodoma’ sequel. On the other hand, Mejja utilizes comedy in his music to capture the society we live in today in a hilarious way. Some of his most loved storytelling songs include; ‘Siskii’ and ‘Landlord’.

Experience
Both artists boast over ten years in the industry having made their debuts in the mid-2000s. Mejja was mainly associated with Calif records while King Kaka operated as an independent artist.

Awards and Nominations
In 2008, Mejja won Kenya’s Chaguo La Teeniz award for his hit single ‘Jana Kuliendaje’. In 2012, he won another award for the Teeniez Male Artist of the year. Fast forward to 2020, Mejja was nominated in both Pulse Music Video and Kisima Music and Film Awards for his feature in hit song ‘Utawezana’ by Femi One. On the other hand, King Kaka won two awards at the 2018 Pulse Music Video Awards (PMVA) for the; Male Video of the Year award and Viewer’s Choice of the Year.
Albums and EPs
In 2008, King Kaka aka Rabbit released his full-length debut album dubbed ‘Tales of Kaka Sungura’, where he established himself as a spoken word artist. Fast forward to 28th January 2016, King Kaka released a mix tape dubbed ‘It’s the King’. In 2020, King Kaka dropped another mix tape dubbed ‘The Servant &the King’. On the other hand, Mejja is yet to officially drop an album, but has consistently been releasing single hit songs.

Online Streams
Mejja and King Kaka have been using YouTube and other streaming sites to upload their music. Currently, King Kaka’s YouTube channel which premiered on 13th Jul 2009 is leading with 34,183,281 views while Mejja’s channel which premiered on 7th May 2020 has 9,000,137 views.

In today’s world, Instagram is a very important tool to all artists as it allows them to communicate directly with their fans. It allows them to announce music premieres and also promote new music releases. In this category, King Kaka leads with over 1.5 million followers with Mejja following closely with over 767,000 followers.
