Stonebwoy Vs Shatta Wale: Who is Ghana's Dancehall King?

Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale are always the first two names that come up when you want to start the conversation of the best Dancehall artistes in Ghana. As such, many comparisons have been done about the two dancehall giants with fans always torn in between choosing who the better act is.

While the comparisons have never been conclusive, Shatta wale has, on several occasions, publicly proclaimed himself as the king of African dancehall music. This article is going to look at the achievements of the two artistes over the years.

- Awards and Nominations

Shatta Wale has received several awards and nominations. He is currently the most Awarded Dancehall artist in Africa and one of the most awarded dancehall artist in the world. In 2019, he made a record as a dancehall artist for winning eight awards at the 2019 3 Music Awards ceremony. His recent awards include the “Collaboration of the Year” for the song “Already” at the BreakTudo Awards in 2020. In 2019, he won the Reggae Dancehall Artiste of the Year award and also the Popular Song of the Year award with the song “My Level” in the Ghana Music Awards UK.

On the other hand, Stonebwoy has also received several awards and nominations ranging from "Artist of the Year" to "Album of the Year." He won the Best International Act: Africa category at the 2015 BET Awards and Artist of the Year at the 2015 Ghana Music Awards. Stonebwoy has also received two Billboard plaques.  His most recent award is the Best African Reggae/Dancehall Entertainer award at the International Reggae and World Music Awards. He also scooped the Best Reggae Dancehall Artiste award at the AFRIMA 2019. In 2018, Stoneybwoy was proclaimed Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the Year in the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards. His sophomore album, Necessary Evil, was the recipient of 3 Ghana Music Awards from 6 nominations.

- Albums

Stonebwoy officially started his music career in 2012 with his first song, "Climax," off his debut album Grade 1. Currently, he has four albums to his name; Grade 1 (2012), Necessary Evil (2014), Epistles of Mama (2017), Anloga Junction (2020). 

On the other hand, Shatta Wale began his career in 2004 with the release of his first single, "Moko  Hoo," featuring Tinny. Shatta also has four albums to his credit, the most popular being the Reign Album which was released in 2018. His other projects include; The Storm album (2016), Cloud 9 (2017, hip hop mixtape), Wonder Boy album (2019)

Both artists have been using YouTube as a top platform to upload most of their music. Stonebwoys YouTube channel currently has over 533K subscribers. On the other hand, Shatta Wale’s Youtube channel has over 736K subscribers.

- Social Media Followers

The two artistes are very active users of social media. Shatta wale has 2.9M followers on Twitter while Stonebwoy follows with 2.4M followers. On the photo and video sharing platform Instagram, Stonebwoy has 3.7M followers while Shatta wale follows with 3.3M followers.
