Veteran Kenyan artist JuaCali has weighed in on current wave of breakups affecting many Gengetone groups, noting that most youthful artists are yet to experience the difficult side of life, thus the decision to try out several things including ditching their groups.
Speaking during an interview with comedian Jalang’o on his Bonga na Jalas show, JuaCali noted that when things get tough, the artists will shape up and get their acts together.

“Unajua kama sisi era yetu tulikuwa wengi, tulianza wengi sana, but over the years watu wamekuwa wakijitoa, sai tumebaki wachache sana Nameless, Wyre, tuko very few. So hii kitu inategemea pia na mtu. Unajua jo mi siezi enda kwa keja ya kina Ochungulo ni waambie wewe buda amka, hao baada ya miaka kadhaa life ikianza kuwagonga, ndo wataamka,” he explained.
According to JuaCali, the new generation artists are likely to succeed if they follow the footsteps of veteran genge artists like him, Nonini and Mejja among others.

“So, kwa wale washarp wale wajanja, wafuate footsteps zetu, hao ndio watatoboa. Kama utaenda solo, ukiwa kwa group uende solo, hujisaidie, sawa but, hii blue print tumeshaweka. Si lazima every time tumeet tuwambie, kuwaambia tumewaambia, but hii blue print tumewapatia, ya kufuata fanyeni ngoma hivi, mtakula macooperates one, two, three,” he explained.
As to his input in nurturing and empowering young musicians, JuaCali noted that he has incorporated a lot of rising stars in his upcoming album.
“Mimi nimekuwa nao nimekuwa nawasaidia nawapatia moral support waendelee tu hivo. Album yangu mpya wamejaa hapo ndani. Mavijana wapya so mi niko nao hapa ki hapa,” he added.
Currently, a number of gengetone groups have either broken up officially or are rumoured to be in the process of doing so. Early this year, Ochungulo family disbanded, with reports indicating that groups like Ethic, Sailors and Boondocks Gang may be headed the same way.
