Backlash as Bobby East Features Nez Long, Slapdee in New Political Song ‘Abwelelepo’

Celebrated Zambian musician Bobby East has received criticism from fans over his latest song dubbed ‘Abwelelepo’ featuring Nez Long, Slapdee and Elisha.

‘Abwelelepo’ is a political song that many believe is campaigning for long the Patriotic Front (PF) party ahead of the Zambian general election scheduled for August 12.

Following its release, fans revisited a past remark by Bobby East where the condemned politicians accusing them of abandoning their constituents after being elected.

In June 2020, Bobby East called out politicians painting them as liars and self-centered.

“Politicians love us when we sing them praise and dance on their campaign trucks before elections. Afterwards, they don’t do anything for us and when a few complain, they are met with threats. Comrades we are being taken for a ride, I implore you do not campaign for these pipo (sic),” he tweeted.

Reacting to his new release, a section of fans accused him of ‘being bought’ by PF.

Following the massive reactions, Bobbby East was forced to hold a one-on-one session to calm down his fans.

“You guys have a lot to say I’m sure and it’s cowardly for me not to post anything....My comment section is open...Share yours views.....I’ll read everything and reply where I can....” he stated.

 Fans would hear none of it with the anthem being “he sold his soul for money”.

This is how he responded: “I understand that a lot of you feel let down. I did after all go back on my own word (go figure I’m only human)..its not like we are greedy and just wanted to add to the wealth we had piled on…personally like most of you I Survive from cheque to cheque. The arts have been surviving on passion for a long time and after a while, we move to being with nothing to show for it.

“I weighed my options and even though this backlash was expected, I accepted the work for my family. I think a lot of you would do the same…I have spent 10 years working on my craft this is my job, my skill set! No one will pay me for anything else even though our values may differ I pray that one day we will agree to disagree and get along.”
