Celebrated RnB artist Otile Brown has stirred a debate online after he put up along post on his Insta story calling for Kenyan artists to be respected. According to Otile, Kenyan artists work hard and get limited help compared to other musicians in the world.

"I think Kenyan artists should be respected…All of those ‘big artist’ y’all compare us with, they had/have Godfathers who hold them down, and even now that they’ve made it, their godfathers are still putting money on their projects. Our growth has to be slow and gradual coz we are always doing it by ourselves, no label no investors, and remember we ain’t from rich families.. We have to balance the little we get to pay bills, take care of our families and invest it back in the business,” his message read in part.

Otile further noted that Kenyan artists have been failed by the government, media, and corporates who reimburse them unfairly after collecting revenue, adding that even young rich Kenyans only like to appear around artists in order to look cool.

“We’ve been failed by our government, media, and even some selfish stakeholders in the business eg music distributors who take advantage of artists….tell me why a corporate brand would take about 70% of all the revenues collected from platforms such as ring-back tones and other platforms, they’ve suck us dry… I also see young ballas but all they want is to call you for a hang out on alcohol and women just to make them look cool.. That’s why y’all will never see me around them,” he added.

Otile has called upon fans to think before comparing achievements between Kenyan artists and other bigger artists, adding that he was okay with his gradual growth in the music industry.

"Before y’all speak, always know that we’re doing it ourselves and those, who you think are better than us “wamebebwa”. What they think about is how to grow in their music coz everything else is sorted. With Love and I’m straight btw and okay with my gradual growth.. Just stop thinking and saying that we ain’t putting in enough effort!” he posted
