Samedi is Saturday is released today
28 February 2021
Samedi is Saturday is the name of my new single. It is released today on several digital music streaming platforms, including my Bandcamp page at www.juwonogungbe.bandcamp.com
It is the opening track on my soon to be released EP – ‘Glisten and Burn’, which features Baron Samedi - a spirit from the Vodun faith, offering advice and support to people who are struggling to cope with developments brought about by the pandemic we’ve all been living through.
In the early days of the first lockdown, I had a conversation with an artist who happens to be an elder, about creative responses to the situation. At that point in time, I was inclined toward slowing down and taking stock. The older artist suggested that I should prepare to create new work, inspired by the strange turn of events. In the short term, I collaborated with him on an online exhibition project that was based in South Africa. My own response would need a longer gestation period than his.
Here we are, almost a year later and I’m ready to share some work. ‘Glisten and Burn’ is to be launched in an online performance event on the 19th of March. The event shall feature music, an invocation and a conversation with Chukwunyere Kamalu, an esteemed colleague and friend.
Samedi is Saturday is available to hear on Deezer, Spotify, Apple Music and all reputable digital music platforms.
