Win For Harmonize as Tanzanian Government Announces New Music Awards Scheme

Tanzania is set to hold an annual music and arts awards ceremony organized by the government.

The awards slated for next year were announced by the country’s Minister of Information and Arts, Hassan Abbasi.

In a statement, Abbasi revealed that the awards are part of recognizing the best talent in bongo and encouraging creatives to excel in their work.

He noted that the ministry would partner will relevant stakeholders to realize the goal.

"Moja ya kazi kubwa ya sekta ya sanaa nchini ni kuhakikisha jamii yetu inayochapa kazi sana kwa sasa inaburudika ipasavyo, sasa naona sanaa inakuja tu pale panapokuwepo mdhamini au mwandaaji fulani asipokuwepo hakuna matukio na nchi iko kimya. Serikali sasa inakwenda kuchechemsha sekta hii kwa kuratibu Tamasha kubwa sana litaanzia Uwanja wa Uhuru Dar es Salaam na kuendelea kuungana na Tamasha la Kimataifa la Sanaa Bagamoyo,” said Abbasi.

His sentiments come after musicians like Harmonize blasted the government for not having a domestic award.

According to Harmonize, it was hard for local musicians to win awards organized by foreign entities. The Konde Worldwide boss noted that the local music awards schemes understand the market better than foreigners. He made the remarks after missing out on the 2020 AFRIMMA Awards.
