Jazz Artiste Somi Nominated for Grammy Awards

Rwandan jazz artiste Laura Kabasomi Kakoma alias Somi has been nominated for the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards.

The US-based artiste who doubles up as a songwriter joins a list of very artistes from East Africa or who have roots in the region to be nominated for the Grammy Awards.

The event will go down on January 31, 2021, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

America’s Recording Academy is the lead organizer of the Grammy Awards. The academy is made up of producers, musicians and support crew on music.

Somi’s album ‘Holy Room’ which she released recently was nominated for the Grammy Awards under Best Jazz Vocal Album category.

“Today I was nominated for my very first Grammy Award in the Best Jazz Vocal Album category. I am so overwhelmed with gratitude (and can’t stop crying!),” she broke the good news to her fans after she was nominated in a virtual conference.

She thanked her family for supporting her as well as Germany-based Frankfurt Radio Big Band which had her recorded live at the Alte Apor whose video made up ‘Holy Room’.

“Thank you to my family and all who have supported, cheered, inspired, and loved me through my journey. Thank you to the Recording Academy for this honor ….and to the glorious Frankfurt Radio Big Band for making this project a reality.”
