Rwanda’s Minister of State in charge of Youth and Culture Edouard Bamporiki has hit out at a section of Rwandan musicians who have turned to explicit musicas a way of entertaining the public.

Speaking during a recent interview on Zinduka; a popular morning talk show, Bamporiki swore that he will not support such music.

He said that he would rather resign than support such content in the name of talent.

Referencing to the lock down days when coronavirus was ravaging the country, he accused a section of artistes of using this lacuna to produce “sexually laced lyrics” which sent the wrong message to the young people.

The State Minister termed this type of content as “undesirable”.

Bamporiki was referring to several hits including ‘Igare’ done by Mico The Best, ‘Saa Moya’ (Bruce Melodie), ‘Ntiza’ (Kagame ft Bruce Melodie) and ‘Ubushyuhe’ by DJ Pius and Bruce Melodie.

The songs, he said, eroded Rwandan values and promoted obscenity noting that they only care about YouTube views and not the morals that they are instilling on future generations.

“They don’t even attempt to hide it. They can come up with terms that are suggestive in the audios but whatever they tried to cover up in the audio comes out in the video,” Bamporiki lamented.

He warned that some of the explicit videos on some of the songs will make the artistes have a day with the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) on suspicion of committing crimes.

Bamporiki concluded by saying that although support for musicians is paramount, he cannot support such content.

“As we think of social support for musicians and members of the creative industry, we look at different things, but I would say that I would rather resign from my position rather than seeing this support go to artistes who sing explicit content,” Bamporiki said.
