Can I brag a little? I felt proud that I own a piece of clothing created by a company featured on Beyonce.com. In a way, I have something handpicked by Beyonce’s team and if you’re in Kenya, you can own one of El Afrique’s pieces too. Enough of the fawning, let’s get to the business of why persons of influence in the entertainment industry supporting upcoming acts not only opens more doors and uncovers hidden gems in terms of talent but is imperative during this maddening pandemic.

‘Black is King’ was an impactful project and has received a lot of great reviews. Part of this film was filmed in South Africa and stars such as Lupita Nyong’o, Wizkid, Yemi Alade, Busiswa, Tiwa Savage, Nija and Saint JHE were featured. There were also countless of other African directors and storytellers who participated. I can’t confirm this but I’m sure there was monetary compensation especially for directors. And even If they weren’t directly compensated, it’s important to appreciate the trickle-down monetary value of the project. Attire and accessories designed by local artists were definitely paid for, makeup and let’s not forget the props used in the different sets. This distribution of compensation is how we keep encouraging and inspiring growth of the local creative scene.
