Pascal Tokodi and Jua Cali Fall for a Con Trap

Janjaruka Series is set for official launch on 14th August 2019, at Pawa 254. This thrilling web series delves into the con culture that is now accepted as the norm in Kenya’s capital city, Nairobi. The plot follows Sasha, who gets conned when she tries to gain her independence by renting her first flat. Sasha and her three friends set their foot down in the quest for justice, to bring down a con mogul who proves to be almost unstoppable.

The build up to Janjaruka's release has seen some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry come forward with their con stories. Their #MyConStory series only proves how cons are getting smarter and swifter by the day. Their stories range from moving house (as told by Pascal Tokodi and Nice Githinji) to buying a car (Nini Wacera); from everyday gadgets like phones, (Keith Chuaga) to starting out in the music business (Jua Cali). Every week, from now until the end of the release of Janjaruka, a new celebrity shares a new con story.

The stories are told with laughter but there is often also embarrassment at having been conned, as if being conned as a Nairobian is a shameful thing, that you should be smart enough to avoid it. But the truth is, con men and women are so professional and there are so many cons, each one tailored for every hope and dream, that it is unavoidable. No one can escape it.

The rise of con comes in the wake of multiple government scandals that have been used to swindle tax payers off their hard earned money. Janjaruka Series hopes to spark the #CONversation so systems can function to protect potential victims and also encourage vigilance among city residents looking to spend money on lifestyle accessories.

History can recall con men and women looking shifty and behaving suspect. But time has seen these scams grow into an art form and a multi-million shilling business. These con "artists" are now so invested in their work, even to the extent of hiring fancy clothes, cars and houses to get that hard-earned money from the trusting public. Con artists have created networks that span far and wide and they have become almost as powerful as our politicians – and perhaps, just as untouchable.

Flick 7 Pictures, which produced Janjaruka, has nudged a sensitive arm to provoke an important discussion that is long overdue. A new episode will be released every week after the launch and celebrity con stories also continue to be released weekly on the official Janjaruka Youtube Channel. Catch the trailer as you wait for what is about to shake mighty tables.

Janjarauka is calling for everyone to join in the #CONverstion by sharing their con stories via Janjaruka Series social media sites.
