Artist of the day: Jakaqu
4 March 2014
Though the Hip hop scene in Kenya may be crowded and at times prove hard to penetrate into, Jakaqu of Spades is rigid in his ambition to penetrate into the mainstream industry and is not ready to settle for less until his desire is fulfilled.
Since his childhood, this talented rapper had a passion for music and it was only later in high school that he decided to take music more seriously.
While in College, Jakaqu had already fully made up his mind to pursue music more professionally urging him to team up with two of his friends and together they formed a gospel group that used to perform for free in schools and public events.
However the group did not last long and after a while broke up with each of them pursuing solo careers, Jakaqu's big break came in early 2010 when he released his debut single “Chris Kirubi” that received considerable amount of airplay in FM stations around the county.
"The song was about Chris Kirubi who is regarded as one of the richest businessmen in Kenya and was aimed to encourage the youths to work hard and be rich like the businessman." shared Jakaqu
His debut mixtape 'Rugged and Raw' which was released last year marked his first official attempt to penetrate into the mainstream media.
“When I started out as an underground rapper I was making music to relate to many people and things in the society, but now I am going commercial because I feel like I am ready for the mainstream market,” he shared with Mdundo during an exclusive interview.
